This week the Junior Kindergarten students played What Time Is It, Mr. Wolf and The Magic Disk. The psychomotor objective in both games was to be able to move freely in open space without bumping into other students.
The kindergarten students did a lesson on catching with scarves and a catching lesson with footballs. The scarf lesson was done to music with students being given increasingly more difficult tasks to complete. For the football lesson, students were assessed on their ability to catch a tossed ball with their hands from 5 yards away.
First grade students also worked on football skills. Demonstrating the correct grip starts with the peace sign. The peace fingers go above the laces with the ring and pinkie fingers on the laces. When catching students should use their hands instead of their bodies. The hands are soft and can absorb the ball like a sponge. The chest is hard like a wall and the ball will bounce off of it if given the chance. To ready the hands students should place them out away from the body in front of the chest with the index and thumbs of both hands creating a diamond shape.
Students in grade two worked on throwing at targets and for distance. They also worked on catching and the proper way to hold the ball after he catch. Four points of contact were emphasized: hand, forearm, bicep, and chest.
Grade three finished up fitness testing (the mile, pull ups, sit and reach) and started their football unit. Catching and throwing were revisited.
Students in grade four completed the mile run and started football. Accuracy and catching/throwing while moving were visited. They also played small games that emphasized these skills.
