The physical education department has changed the way the classes will be organized. Starting this year, each teacher will be responsible for following one class/group per grading period. For the first trimester, I will be teaching the following groups: Vigue, Whitecage, Cameron, Mitchell, and one half of the fourth grade boys. We will also be working with the Alpha students one day a week - something we are very much looking forward to.
Students in grades Alpha through one will continue to work on motor skills independent of specific sports. In grade two the transition to sport specific skills will be made and will continue through grade four.
This week, students in grades JK-1 will be working on tossing, throwing, and catching. Students in JK will begin with simply throwing an object into open space. They will then progress towards throwing at a target while leading with the correct foot. First graders will be expected to demonstrate the ability to step with the correct foot while hitting a stationary target.
Grades two through four will be working with these skills in a football unit. Second graders will continue to work on throwing at a stationary target, catching with the hands (not the body), and learning some of the basic rules of the game. By grade four, students will be throwing to moving targets, receiving the ball while moving, working on pass patterns, and competing for a spot in the Shorecrest Punt, Pass, & Kick competition.
